Fisherfield 2009- Intro and kit list

At long last i get round to writing about my trip to fisherfield. I was away to help support a couple of Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award expeditions by groups from my former high school and sixth form. I myself participated in the Duke of Edinburgh scheme while i was still in sixth form and was very grateful for the opportunity it gave me to develop my walking and wild camping skills. Obviously the expeditions can only run with the support of teachers and helpers from the school who are prepared to take a week out to shadow the groups through the highlands; having gained so much from this help I, in turn, decided to volunteer my own time to return the favour.

Below is my kit list (with weights, as best as i could compile it) including a comment as to whther i actually used it on the trip to help inform choices for future excursions. As can be seen my packed baseweight was somewhere around 9-9.5kg. On top of this was approximately 3kg food, snacks and gas and i carried around 2l of water most of the time (very important given the hot and humid conditions of the week).

Thats all for now. I’ll do further posts on the route, some photos and possibly a journal/report when i get round to them.

starting out

My first blog post. Ok so probably should start with me and whats happening in my life. I’m Andrew Munro, I’m 18 (19 in a fortnight), I’ve just got back home to Durham from my first year studying as an undergraduate studying medicine at King’s College Cambridge. Its been a hard but fun year- there are plenty of tales to tell but they’ll have to wait for future posts. My results for first year come out tomorrow so i’ll probably share how that goes ( I already know i’ve passed all my essential professional exams).  Other than my course my passions are the outdoors (hiking, walking, camping, planning the above and wandering round the internet looking at stuff related to the above[Hi OutdoorsMagic]), computing generally, drinking (I am a student after all- though my favourite tipples are perhaps a little more refined than most- a pint of real ale or a single malt over lager or vodka anyday!!), watersports (kayaking, canoeing, punting), fencing (though that has kind of taken a back seat due to other stuff [like work] getting in the way) and Music (loving a bit of Dan Le Sac Vs. Scroobius Pip just now). There’s other stuff too but i guess that will come out with future posts. So what am i up just now- currently i’m procrastinating to avoid unpacking and tidying my room thus the blogging but next week i’m off to Fisherfield in Northern Scotland to help out with running some duke of edinburgh expeditions. I’ll be spending most of this week preparing for that- I’ll try post a kit list and a few other details before I head off and a report when i get back (can’t promise too many awesome photo’s as i misplaced my camera last week so i’m limited to the 5Mp that my phone offers).

OK well best get on TTFN
